Nathaniel Bowman

Lawton Public Schools would like to extend a heartfelt “Congratulations!” to Lawton High School's Nathaniel Bowman for becoming a finalist in the Pulitzer Center’s 2020 Fighting Words Poetry Contest! Nathaniel’s Poem “Cracks” was initially selected as one of the top 19 out of almost 1,000 entries from across the world. Then in the semi-final round, he was ranked in the top 3!

Nathaniel’s poem “Cracks” will be featured on the Pulitzer Center website, with the judges saying of his poem, “We agreed that you effectively highlighted a systemic issue while maintaining focus on the human costs.... Thank you for writing this wonderful poem and for entering it into the Fighting Words Poetry Contest. We're honored to publish and be in community with you."

This isn’t the first time Nathaniel has impressed with his poetry. Earlier this year, he won second place nationally in the 11th- grade division of the 2020 Daughters of the American Revolution Junior Citizens Poetry Contest with another poem entitled “Milkweed.”
